Creative Writing? In German? Geht klar!

A space dedicated to literary works written in German by undergraduates in the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures

Welcome!

In spring 2020, we had the pleasure of teaching WashU’s first ever course in creative writing in German for non-native speakers: German 4105: Creative Writing? In German? Geht klar!

Each week, students wrote new poems, short prose, and radio plays, inspired by German-language originals. They then developed these pieces in our weekly workshop (initially in person, then later via Zoom) with the help and encouragement of their peers. The end results were captivating, moving and, at times, downright hilarious. Now, we are delighted to be able to present a small selection of our students’ impressive literary work.

We would like to take this opportunity to send a heartfelt thanks to the writers who joined the class over the course of the semester: Gönül Kıgılcım, writer and graduate student in Comparative Literature (International Writers’ Track), for walking the class through a translation of her novel from Turkish to German; Visiting Hurst Professor Efe Duyan for his workshop on literary translation; and finally Max Kade Writer-in-Residence Monika Rinck for joining us via Zoom to share a reading and interpretation session on one of her poems with us.

We look forward to continuing the conversation!

A message from our faculty...

On April 23, 2020, we will be holding a live online salon in which the students will read from a broader sample of their creative works. The salon is open to students' friends and family, as well as the wider WashU community. For more details, please email Professor Goeritz or Dr. Ross.
