Dr. Kurt Beals takes over as Director of the Max Kade Center

The Department of Germanic Languages and Ltieratures is proud to congratualte and bring attention to Kurt Beals, who has taken over as director of the Max Kade Center for Contemporary German Literature!

Visting writer for 2023: Jan Wagner

The editor of two influential anthologies of German language poetry, including, with the poet Björn Kuhligk, Poetry of the Now: 74 Voices, Wagner is also the German translator of several British and American poets, including James Tate, Matthew Sweeney, and Charles Simic. He is the recipient of the Mondsee Poetry Award, the Anna Seghers Award, the Ernst Meister Award for Poetry, the Mörike Preis, and the first Arno Reinfrank Award. In 2017, he was awarded the Georg Büchner Prize. He lives in Berlin.

 

Visiting critic for 2023: Marie Schmidt

This year's visiting critic, Marie Schmidt, will focus on topics relating to immigration in German language and literature, covering authors including Emine Sevgi Özdamar, Sasha Marianna Salzmann, Tomer Gardi, Saša Stanišić, and Uljana Wolf.
