Gerhild Williams

In Celebration of Gerhild Scholz Williams

Please join the German Department in celebrating the career of Gerhild Scholz Williams on the occasion of her retirement!

Over nearly 50 years, Gerhild Scholz Williams, Barbara Schaps Thomas and David M. Thomas Professor in the Humanities, has had an extraordinary impact on Washington University, Arts & Sciences, the Department of German Languages and Literatures, and the Program in Comparative Literature, serving and leading in many capacities, among others, as Associate Vice Chancellor, Vice Provost, and chair of German Languages and Literatures.  As colleague, mentor, teacher, and friend, she has made it her life’s work to facilitate the work of others and to support the multiple missions of the university. Known for her extensive and original work on early modern literature and culture, she has also mustered enormous energy and commitment to the profession at large as the long-time president of the American Friends of the Herzog August Bibliothek and as former president of the Sixteenth Century Society, her life work honored recently by the SCSC medal.
