GERMANIC LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES 4102

In the German-speaking nations of Europe, the first half of the nineteenth century is defined historically by the collision of revolutionary and restorative forces, by the conflict between the needs for change and for stability. The resulting social, political, and aesthetic tensions are reflected in all aspects of its culture, including literature, philosophy, music, and art. In this course we will examine primary source material from all these areas and others in hopes of achieving a nuanced understanding of the period and its definitive characteristics. In addition to encouraging a more nuanced understanding of an important cultural topic, the course will also provide students with the analytical and linguistic skills necessary for discussing cultural topics in German. All readings, assignments, and discussions in German. Prerequisite: German 302D and German 340C/340D OR German 341/341D OR German 342/342D or permission of the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
