This graduate course deals with contemporary German literature. The Max Kade Critic-in-Residence, Paul Ingendaay, will discuss autobiographical writings that appeared in the past two decades. The authors included will be W.G. Sebald, Hans Ulrich Treichel, Ulrike Edschmid, Arno Geiger, and Verena Lueken. The Max Kade Writer-in-Residence, Monika Rinck, will deal with the most recent trends in lyrical poetry, primarily with the problem of the lyrical voice in contemporary crisis situations. The poets she will include are Ann Cotten, Elke Erb, Maren Kames, Monika Rinck, Charlotte Warsen, Daniel Falb, and Anja Utler. Admission for undergraduate senior German majors is allowed only with permission of the Director of Graduate Studies.
