This graduate course deals with contemporary German literature. The Max Kade Critic in Residence, Ernst Osterkamp, will discuss the "Poetikvorlesungen" of five writers in connection with one of their major works: Marcel Beyer, Brigitte Kronauer, Terezia Mora, and Jan Wagner. The "Poetikvorlesungen" theorize contemporary German literature. The question is whether they can also help explain the writers' own works. The theme in the seminar taught by the Max Kade Writer in Residence, Ernst-Wilhelm Haendler, is the production process of the writers' texts (control or openness to feedback). The authors dealt with are primarily writers of Austrian literature: Thomas Bernhard, Peter Handke, Daniel Kehlmann, Thomas Glavinic, Clemens Setz and Ernst-Wilhelm Haendler. Admission for undergraduate seniors who major in German with permission of the Director of Graduate Studies.
