While he is in St. Louis, Hoefer will be working on a research project entitled Jazz in German-Language Literature: A Story of Transatlantic Cultural Encounter and Exchange.
His recent research focuses on the impact, meaning, and representation of jazz in German fiction. Other research interests include the theory of cultural icons, literature and music, and literature and myth. Hoefer is a research associate at the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, where he received his doctorate, with a thesis entitled Deutscher Universalismus: Zur mythologisierenden Konstruktion des Nationalen in der Literatur um 1800. He studied German literature, philosophy, and modern history while at the University.
