Transnational Framings: The German Literary Field in the Age of Nationalism, 1848-1919
Scheduled for September 2-4, 2021, Transnational Framings: The German Literary Field in the Age of Nationalism, 1848-1919, with sixteen case studies, will seek to bring into view the push and pull of the national and international in Germany and Austria in the so-called Age of Nationalism toward a new approach to the literary history of the period. Viewing even overtly national(ist) literature and national cultural projects as belonging to an international system, these case studies examine the interrelations of the agents, forces, enterprises, and processes that constituted the Austro-German literary-cultural field during this fraught period. The German novelist and poet Matthias Goeritz will open the symposium on September 2 with a reading from his soon-to-be-published historical novel. The symposium is being co-organized by Professor Lynne Tatlock and Professor Kurt Beals.
All events are open to the general public.
